La Compagnie des chemins de fer du Nord

Updated: 26-11-2013

Created in 1845 by a consortium led by the Rothschild family, the Compagnie des Chemins de Fer du Nord exploited, as it's name suggests, a network of lines throughout the north of France. Although they did not neglect passenger traffic their primary interest was in the carriage of freight and, above all, coal in the industrial basin around Lille. Their interest in shipping, compared to their British counterparts was somewhat limited.

The company came under state control with the creation of the SNCF in 1938.

Le Nord operated ships included :
Le Pas-de-Calais
