L'Administration des chemins de fer de l'Etat

Updated: 24-11-2013

The Administration des chemins de fer de l'Etat, or Réseau de l'Etat was created by the governement in 1878 to save a number of independent, loss making but politically important lines. It came to the rescue of the bankrupt Chemins de Fer de l'Ouest in 1908. The Réseau de l'Etat took over the shipping interests of l'Ouest, continuing the partnership with the London Brighton and South Coast Railway

1938 all the French railways were nationalised. The Etat was merged with all the other companies to form the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français (SNCF)

l'Etat operated ships included :
Tamise  (ex. l'Ouest)
Manche  (ex. l'Ouest)
France  (ex. l'Ouest)
Newhaven
Rouen
Versailles
